Our Assistance to Albania
It is now six years since SATE supplied practical help to teachers of English in Albania. With active support of SATE members, we collected large quantities of textbooks, fiction, cassettes and reference books from our own members and other sources, and sent six consignments of valuable material to ill-equipped schools. Many thanks to all of you who contributed to this important assistance. Textbooks were welcomed in classroomes where previously there had just been one copy for the teacher, many of the fine books you sent me became the pride of a newly established school library. Due political crises since March 1997 it has become almost impossible to dispatch a consignment. Conditions have become very dangerous for foreign lorries, which are likely to be attacked and looted, irrespective of their contents. So I would ask you to send no more books until I make another announcement in the newsletter.
The good news, though, is that we are continuing our hospitality programme each year, offering two Albanian teachers of English a 2-week stay in Switzerland to visit memberšs classes, and usually an English teachers workshop or convention.
